THE GOLD WATCH (CONTINUED)

The value judgments made by the secretaries at the RAND Corporation and Butch in Pulp Fiction may not seem like much, but they’re not easy computations. Butch and the secretaries had to apply the lessons of the past to the present, look for deeper causes, and compare very different kinds of values.

This is more than what the typical algorithm can do. Algorithms learn by running millions of consequence-free simulations to find which option is most likely to produce the ideal outcome. It’s discovery by brute force, like Edison’s thousands of experiments before finding the right mixture of materials to make the filament for the lightbulb.

We humans don’t get to run a million iterations. We only get to live life once. We need every tool we can find to make the best decisions.

This is why a broader spectrum of values is so crucial. Values are a guidance system based on the collective wisdom of our ancestors and the inputs of our cultures. Values are what make right and wrong. We ignore them at our peril.

Bentoism rationally expands the field of vision to a wider spectrum of values. It builds a muscle memory into our thinking that allows us to access these important but harder-to-reach spaces. The spaces where better choices and more impactful values await.

Expanding the value spectrum isn’t an irrational choice. The irrational choice is to keep ignoring it. As some people are already learning, expanding the idea of value isn’t just a rational next step. It’s a competitive advantage.
